Brief
A family that wanted the house to carry its inheritance — and did not want a heritage pastiche to do it.
Constraint
Traditional Indian ornament usually arrives as applied decoration. Applied to a modern plan it reads as costume.
Approach
Craft is placed where the structure already wants an event: a carved jali where a wall needs relief, a chinoiserie panel where a room needs depth, a block-print daybed where the plan needs a pause.
Material palette
- Carved jali
- Hand-painted mural
- Olive lacquer
- Marble
- Block-printed textile
Outcome
Ornament does structural work here. Remove any one piece and the room loses its centre, which is the test.
